Student Health Benefit Plan Overview

The Office of Student Health Benefits administers health, dental, and pharmacy benefits, and enrollment for all eligible University of Minnesota students, graduate assistants, residents, fellows, and interns.

The University of Minnesota’s Student Health Benefits Plan (SHBP) is a cost-effective, comprehensive health plan designed to meet the unique needs of University students.

With access to thousands of providers and hospitals in BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota's worldwide network, the SHBP provides students with year-round coverage in-network with a variety of medical facilities on and near the UMN campus. The SHBP puts students' needs first and travels with you when you need to access healthcare outside of Minnesota.

Key features of the plan include:

  • 100% coverage of preventative care
  • $250 deductible
  • 80% coverage of eligible expenses after meeting the deductible
  • Access to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota worldwide network
  • Preventive and periodontal dental benefits for the primary member (student) - additional coverage can be purchased through the Dental Buy-Up Plan
  • Year-round coverage
