Summer Coverage
Graduate Assistant Health Plan enrollees automatically remain enrolled through the summer (June 1 - August 31) if their assistantship or fellowship appointment is continued into the month of May unless you complete and submit a Cancellation Form (pdf) indicating you would like to cancel your plan.
Cancel Summer Coverage
Even if you graduate or your eligibility ends in May, your coverage will continue through the summer unless you submit a cancellation form to the Office of Student Health Benefits. The deadline to submit the form is May 31.
Cancellation forms received after the May 31 deadline will result in coverage terminating at the end of the month in which your completed form is received by our office.
International students, and their dependents, on a University of Minnesota-sponsored visa may cancel University coverage if they graduate, enroll in a US-based employer insurance or return to their home country for 90 days or more. In these instances, supporting documentation will be required to complete the cancellation.
Cost of Summer Coverage
The cost of summer GAHP coverage is based on the percentage of the assistantship held during the spring semester or the funding provided for fellowship recipients.
Assistantships
Summer premiums are based on the percentage of the assistantship held during the spring semester.
- 50% assistantship (20 hours per week):
- Summer coverage is fully covered.
- No additional cost to the student.
- Assistantship below 50%:
- The university covers a portion of the summer premium based on the spring appointment percentage.
- The student is responsible for the remaining portion.
- Contact the Office of Student Health Benefits at [email protected] or 612-624-0627 to determine the amount owed for those who held less than a 50% appointment for Spring assistantships.
Example:
- A student who held a 25% assistantship in the spring will have 50% of the summer premium covered and will be responsible for the remaining 50%.
If a student receives an additional assistantship during the summer, that appointment may contribute toward the cost of summer GAHP coverage, potentially reducing the amount the student owes.
Fellowships
Summer coverage costs for students with fellowships depend on whether their department provides summer funding.
- If the department provides funding for summer coverage:
- The student will not be responsible for the summer premium.
- If no summer funding is provided:
- The student is responsible for the full cost of summer coverage.
