Graduate Assistant Health Plan (GAHP)
Graduate Students
Eligible graduate students must:
- Work 195 hours per semester (65 hours for summer term) in an eligible position
- Must be properly registered for the number of credits required for your job class or appointment
Note: Not all graduate students are eligible for the Graduate Assistant Health Plan. If you do not meet the criteria above, you cannot enroll in coverage through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan.

Graduate Trainees or Fellows
Eligible trainees or fellows must:
- Receive a stipend during the academic year equivalent to at least a 25% nine-month graduate assistantship
- Work for a department who agrees to pay the full departmental cost of coverage during the academic year

GAHP Additional Eligibility Information
- Graduate assistants holding hourly appointments in an eligible class title of 195 hours or more per semester (65 hours in summer), as estimated by your departments, are eligible for the GAHP.
- Where a graduate assistant (GA) has more than one eligible GA appointment, the appointments are combined to determine eligibility.
- Summer contribution: The University will contribute to the summer premium for graduate assistants enrolled in the GAHP spring semester. See Summer Coverage for more details.
- The Graduate Assistant Health Plan will remain active through the end of the month in which an eligible position ends. The exception to this are appointments ending in May as the coverage will automatically continue through August 31st. (see Summer Coverage for information on potential summer premiums).
- Registration requirement: GA's must be registered for at least one eligible course for Fall and Spring to be eligible for the GAHP except for the placeholder course GRAD 999. (requirement doesn't apply to class title 9560: Post-Doctoral Fellow)

Dependent Eligibility
You can enroll your dependents:
- At the same time you are initially eligible;
- Within 31 days of involuntary loss of other coverage;
- Within 31 days of marriage, birth, or adoption;
- If on a University of Minnesota sponsored visa, within 31 days of a recent arrival into the US or during the open enrollment period.
Definition of Eligible Dependents
Listed below are the individuals who are considered eligible dependents:

An eligible child can include your unmarried or married biological child, legally adopted child or child placed for purposes of adoption, foster child, stepchild, or any other child state or federal law requires be treated as a dependent.
Note: The spouse of your eligible married dependent child is not eligible for coverage.
